Everything you need to know about the traffic light system and what we cover

The traffic light system which was introduced Mid-May 2021 is in place with the aim of categorising countries based on the level of covid-19 risk. Countries on the ‘green list’ are seen to have a low level of infection, with the vaccine roll-out in full force and minimal concern over new strains or variants, whereas those that are a higher risk are either on the amber or red list.

At Get Going, we can protect your trip against various scenarios to do with the coronavirus outbreak, however if you do choose to travel to an Amber or Red country, then your level of protection may be lessened, given that you are technically travelling against the advice of the FCDO.

As it stands the Department of Transportation have stated, ‘you should not travel to red or amber list countries or territories for leisure purposes.’ Bear in mind that there is no cover under any of our policies if customers travel against the advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), regardless of the Department of Transportation’s position.

I am travelling to a Green country, what cover can I get?

We can provide cover for those travelling to Green countries and territories so long as you are not travelling against the advice of the FCDO.

This cover includes emergency medical expenses providing you comply with all rules and restrictions set by the country or territory you are travelling to.

All Get Going customers must follow any advice that is in place at the time of travel and for the duration of the trip by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This includes returning to the UK if the FCDO change their travel advice based on the risks being presented at the time. Failure to comply with the FCDO advice may invalidate your policy.

Do keep in mind that when you purchase a policy with us*, that there is no cover under any of our policies for the costs associated with the following:

•             Cancellation due to a change in FCDO advice caused by the pandemic.

•             Denied entry to the country or territory they are due to travel to.

•             Having to quarantine or isolate when returning to the UK (this includes hotel quarantine costs).

•             Having to purchase/pay for Covid-19 test.

I am travelling to an Amber country, what cover can I get?

We can provide cover under our policies if you are travelling to an Amber country providing you are not travelling against the advice of the FCDO.

This being said there is no cover under the policy for cancellation relating to a country or territories traffic light categorisation. This means should you book a trip and that destination change from Green to Amber, then you would not be able to claim for cancellation.

We will however include the following:

•             Cover under the policy for all other sections of the policy, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.

•             Cover for emergency medical expenses providing you comply with all rules and restrictions set by the country or territory they are travelling to.

Get Going customers must follow any advice that is in place at the time of travel and for the duration of the trip by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This includes returning to the UK if the FCDO change their travel advice based on the risks being presented at the time. Failure to comply with the FCDO advice could invalidate your policy.

I am travelling to a Red country, what cover can I get?

Get Going will not provide any cover under any section of the policy to customers who are, or are planning on, travelling to countries or territories categorised as ‘Red.’ – This means no claims will be paid under any section of the policy for trips relating to ‘Red’ countries, including but not limited to ‘Cancellation, Curtailment and Medical Expenses’.

Please be advised, that in the unlikely event that the FCDO advice permits travel to a Red Country, our policies will exclude all cover.

If our stance does change regarding the traffic light system and what we can and cannot cover, then the information above will be updated and the policy wordings adapted accordingly.

*This applies to any policy purchased on or after 13th March 2020.
